Ministry at the Texas Motor Speedway, Gospel Heads?

Posted by Ron on November 11, 2009

It must be November!  The Texas Motor Speedway (TMS) finished out their season with another race.

We finished the race

We finished the race

I will show my ignorance of the whole racing scene by confessing I do not even know who won the race.  I will not even look it up on the net to wow my tens and tens of readers.  My main concern is the reason we were out there, for ministry.  Witnessing, passing our tracts, and fellowship with like-minded “Gospel Heads.”   I figure there are gear heads, so why not Gospel Heads.

Jeff Pittman, my son, Caleb, and I met up at the red roof cabin where the TxARM is located.  Texas Alliance Raceway Ministries are located at TMS.  Under TxARM we are privileged to go in to witness to the thousands of race fans and pass out many tracts.

Jeff conversed with a couple “hippie-type” girls that were a little light in the head.  He did not get their names, but “they could have been called Summer and Tuesday the way they were dressed,” he said.  As soon as Jeff began with the Law, “Summer” said, “I know where you are going with this!”  That was the end of the conversation for the most part.

In my area, I was able to chat with two professing Christians.  Of course, I am not the Judge of the quick and the dead, but God gave me a brain with which to think.  At best, I was thinking they were nominal Christians.

DSCF0003A little later, I was able to speak with a man named Grant who was very polite and patient with me.  Due to the incredible noise volume, I had to ask him to follow me behind some vending trucks in order for us to hear ourselves.  He mentioned to me that his parents attend a Catholic church.  He said that he realized that there was something just not right about their faith.  Grant periodically attends a Baptist church.  As I started reasoning with him, I became aware of his lack of biblical knowledge.  I would normally begin with a well known Bible passage, but he could not tell me how to complete it.  I was not looking for word perfect, just a smattering of knowledge.  He knew I was sincere about his knowing these things and how important knowing the Scripture is to a professing Christian.  Grant was decked with Mardi Gras beads, a wild type hat, and a wild looking t-shirt.  I hope the Lord will know him in the end.

As Jeff and I spoke with people, my son, Caleb, was handing out Gospel tracts to very eager hands.  He distributed hundreds!

On Sunday, Byron Porter, my son, Caleb, and I went back to the track.  This time we were well stocked with more tracks from TLC ministries’, Jon Speed and Tim Crawford.  If I had not had a few conversations, we would have handed out the entire box of tracts.  Overall we gave out about four thousand tracts in about 2 hours.

Bryon talked to a man named Jose who really didn’t care to listen to Gospel things.  At this point you get in what you can and say thank you.

My son Caleb handed out tracts as fast and furious as possible.  People like when you hand out free stuff.  They will take anything you hand them, even Gospel tracts.

Sunday was the day my Lord set up a divine appointment with Christie.  With a name like Christie you would think one might know something about the Gospel, especially if she attended Wedgwood Baptist church.  (For those who are new in North Texas, Wedgwood Baptist is where a gunman entered the sanctuary to shoot and kill several peDSCF0055ople.)  Christie, a Fort Worth Police Woman, was on duty as out at the raceway.  She was armed with a laser gun in one holster, possibly 9mm, or .357 in the other.  I noticed her standing on one of the light pillars looking over the crowd.  She left for a short while, so I was able to take pictures from that light pillar.  After about an hour of giving out tracts, I turned to find Christie standing close enough to me that I was able to hand her a tract.  She began to read the tract when I asked her some tough, thought provoking questions.  Do you go the church anywhere?  She answered yes.  I went from there to the subject of the things she encounters as a police officer that I would probably never see.  Accidents, shootings, death, all a part of her job description.  It was

easy to segue into the Law since she represented the law of the land.  Even though I could see that she was attentively watching for trouble, Christie listened intently.  By the time I got to committing adultery, even visually she was all ears.  I had her attention the rest of the way and I was able to take my time somewhat.  The timing of the whole message was perfect.  After I was finished, someone came to get her to say they needed her assistance.  Off she went.

Our Lord governs time and space.  It takes the perfect time and perfect space to spend time talking about eternal matters to a perfect stranger.  Once the Gospel is fully given within God’s holy appointment, then the perfect stranger becomes a perfect friend.
