In Pange, Lingua, a hymn for Vespers on the Feast of Corpus Christi, Thomas Aquinas wrote:

Sing, my tongue, the Savior’s glory

                               Of His Flesh the mystery sing;

Of the Blood, all price exceeding,

                                 Shed by our immortal King.

In his account, Travels in Holland and Germany, William Penn recorded:

As I have been traveling, the great work of Christ in the earth has often been presented to my view, and the day of the Lord hath been deeply impressed upon me, and my soul and spirit hath frequently been possessed with an holy and weighty concern for the glory and name of the Lord and the spreading of his everlasting truth.

In the typical custom of the age, each day a young sailor would announce the day by singing out:

Blessed be the light of day

And the Holy Cross, we say;

and the Lord of Veritie

And the Holy Trinity.

Blessed be th’ immortal soul

And the Lord who keeps it whole,

Blessed be the light of day

And He who sends the night away.

When The Mountain Crumbles
The mighty mountains are crumbling
Huge waves destroy the land
The wind reaches out with a vengance
And thumb’s it’s nose at man

Earthquakes rumble deep within
Trying to rent the ground
Volcano’s spew their firey brew
No safety to be found

And now the ice is burning
Fire floating up from hell
Burning through the coldness
The wrath of God to tell

How much longer before His vengance
Bursts forth from the sky
When all the wrath He’s holding back
Rains down on us from high

Is this when you will call on Him
When you finally say His Name
As you beg Him to forgive you
And take away the pain

Or will you kneel to the Perfect King
Will you stop and accept Him now
Knowing that He bought our souls
With His sacrificial vow

Fall to your knees and praise His name
Before the gates unlock
Accept Him as your Savior
For you can’t turn back the clock

Solid Doctrine in a Song

From the Gadsby Hymnal #528

The Gospel is good news indeed

To sinners deep in debt;

The man who has no works to plead,

Will thankful be for it.

To know that when he’s nought to pay

His debts are all discharged,

Will make him blooming look as May,

And set his sould at large

No news can be compared with this,

To men oppressed with sin;

Who know what legal bondage is,

And labor but in vain.

Freedom from sin and Satan’s chains

And legal toil as well,

Th Gospel sweetly now proclaims;

Which tidings suit them well.

How gladly does the prisoner hear

What Gospel has to tell!

‘Tis perfect love that casts out fear

And brings him from his cell.

The man who feels his guilt abound,

And knows himself unclean,

Will find the Gospel’s joyful sound,

Is welcome news to him.

BROKEN
I was broken
But now I’m healed
All sin’s unspoken
Have been revealed

Such a heavy load
For years I carried
Heartbroke and cold
All hope was buried

I roamed the night
Coultn’t face the day
Afraid God’s light
Would turn my way

My shame ran deep
It filled my soul
So many tears to weep
Such a costly toll

Then redeeming love
Reached out to me
My Father above
My wounds did see

He took the pain
That I hid from all
Like a gentle rain
His love did fall

His Grace did cleanse
My shattered soul
My heart He mended
His love made me whole

Never again
Will this heart wander
I wait for the day
I can join Him up yonder

THE MEANING OF LOVE

What would make a perfect King
Give up His life for me
To accept the whip and ridicule
Then lay upon that tree

Why would a mighty ruler
Give up His kingdom of gold
Why would He put on a pauper’s cloth
And leave behind His linen robe

He knew I would be a sinner
And follow the king of the air
He knew I would learn about Him
And yet not give a care

So why did this King called Jesus
Agree to His Father’s will
Why did He come and suffer so much
His death, my cup to fill

Why did my Saviour humble Himself
And leave the Heavens above
He came to save my unworthy soul
I guess that’s the true meaning of love

REDEMPTION

A tortured man, bent down by shame
Sin running down his sleeve
Guilt pours out from every pore
For much he has to grieve

A self-indulgent path he’s walked
Not thinking of tomorrow
He’s kept his eyes upon himself
So thoughts of earthly sorrow

He has let his own desires
Paint the picture he wanted to see
He made his world so fine and bright
He was blinded from true destiny

But in the end his soul must turn
And see the road he’s paved
Not shining gold, but twisted roots
No throne, just a simple grave

This tortured man now stands alone
Not knowing where to go
How could anyone want him now
To satan he’s sold his soul

Then in the distant darkness
He hears a soothing voice
A Shepard calling for lost sheep
He’s given one more choice

Another soul redeemed by God
What a great and glorious thing
One more cracked and broken heart
That with His love shall sing

Because our Heavenly Father knows
That the greater a sinner’s story
Is just more proof to all who look
Of the power of His glory

How great that One so perfect
Will forgive this sinful man
No longer bent by winds of fate
Standing tall in God’s healing Hand’s

Jennifer Rene’ Daniel

Cape Town, Africa

Job didn’t hear of the challenge

Satan had made to the Lord

Ignorant, fragile, defenseless

 *

Robbed of his wealth, of his children

Stricken with boils, searing pain

Would he curse God, end in failure

Look, he has triumphed again

 *

Friends were not kind in their comments

Sin must the cause of this be

Surely we speak as the guiltless

Nought like this happened to me

Job said, he’d pass through the furnace

Gold that would purified be

But as the heat kept on coming

He cried in sheer agony

When in the end God had spoken

He said, “don’t you question me”

I who great wonders created

Ask for complete trust in Me

 *

Job was rewarded and given

Twice as much wealth as the past

Satan’s strong boast was confounded

Job’s faith had triumphed at last

 *

Perhaps you are part of the challenge

Satan would have you depart

Far from the faith of the Saviour

He has laid siege to your heart

 *

God is expecting and waiting

Watching with love, tender care

He sets a limit to onslaughts

How much his child’s strength can bare

Will you be gold in the furnace

Tried and more purely refined

Or when the fire is hottest

Curse God and step out of line?

 *

God may not tell of the challenge

But He tells us of His love

And while the battle is raging

He’s watching on from above
